Farsightedness Q & A
What is farsightedness?
Hyperopia, commonly referred to as farsightedness, is a condition in which you have good distance vision, but it’s hard to see well at close distances. Farsightedness is the opposite of nearsightedness (myopia), in which you can see well close-up but struggle at a distance. Farsightedness is the second-most common refractive error, after nearsightedness.
Can I be nearsighted and farsighted at the same time?
You can have one or the other in each eye. Although it’s quite rare, it’s possible to be nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in your other eye. If that’s the case for you, it’s not a problem: Dr. Pinkhasova or Dr. Tamayeva can prescribe different corrective lenses for each eye.
What are the symptoms of farsightedness?
If you're farsighted and don't have proper vision correction, you may have symptoms beyond blurry vision at close distances. Some common farsightedness issues can include headaches, tired eyes or eye strain, and a tendency to squint.
Astigmatism is a refractive error that often occurs at the same time as farsightedness. If you’re farsighted and have blurry vision up close, it might be at least partially due to astigmatism. Astigmatism is quite common, and like farsightedness, it’s easily treatable with the right corrective lenses. Both glasses and contacts can correct astigmatism and farsightedness at the same time.
What is the best solution for farsightedness?
For most men, women, and children, the best solution for farsightedness is corrective lenses. Dr. Pinkhasova or Dr. Tamayeva can prescribe either glasses or contact lenses for your farsightedness.
The National Eye Institute calls eyeglasses the “simplest and safest” option for correcting farsightedness, but contact lenses may offer advantages that glasses don’t. For example, contacts can give you better side vision than glasses do.
In most cases, either glasses or contacts can correct your farsightedness and give you optimal vision, so Dr. Pinkhasova or Dr. Tamayeva will help you make the right choice.
Some adults may opt for laser surgery like LASIK to permanently correct farsightedness without glasses or contacts. But laser surgery isn’t right for everyone. If you’re interested in permanent farsightedness correction, talk to Dr. Pinkhasova or Dr. Tamayeva about whether laser surgery could work for you.
